about the Trio

“Juon Project: the Trio” is a unique formation allowing expanded chamber music repertoire possibilities.  Combining several schools, Asian, North American and Russian,  “the Trio” has been created to bring together various instrumentalists in promoting the Russian-Swiss composer Paul Juon (1872-1940). In every concert, in different combinations of ensembles, musicians will play at least one work of the composer, allowing the public to get acquainted with his extensive chamber and instrumental heritage.

The Trio performs a varied repertoire of new works and masterpieces of the Nineteenth century alongside more traditional works for the genre. With a growing reputation for performing with tremendous energy and artistry, communication and passion, this group aims to create a rich and varied concert experience with great performances of great music; a stimulating musical experience through inspired programming, lively audience interaction, musicianship and precision of the highest caliber.

about Paul Juon (1872-1940)

Paul Juon was quite a well-known composer in the first third of 20th century. His works were performed and published throughout Europe and even in America. But after Juon’s death, his renown rapidly waned? Perhaps because he is difficult to classify: He is neither Russian, Swiss nor German. He is neither Romantic, Modern nor Folklorist. He was once described by a perspective critic as “the missing link between Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky”, which is actually quite applicable. A bit of everything is to be found in his works, though he gives the music his own very personal style. Eberhard Preussner, a music critic and admirer of Juon, wrote in 1926: “Juon’s music is not at all easily understood. With his music Busoni’s comments are relevant: For the public doesn’t know this and doesn’t want to know that in order to absorb a work of Art, half of the work has to be done by the “absorber” himself. This process is not always easy when listening to Juon’s music.”
