Yosen Wang, 18, is a senior at North Allegheny Senior High School. He started his viola studies at age eight and has been studying with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra violist Marylène Gingras-Roy since 2013. Yosen was the 3rd place winner of the 2018 ENKOR Int'l Strings Competition.
His greatest passion lies in chamber music and has been the violist of Amadeus string quartet-piano quintet for four years, winning multiple prestigious awards (including the 2017/18 Montgomery Fellowship Quartet, 2017 Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artists, and the 2016 American Prize).
Yosen is currently a member of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (principal), North Allegheny Honors Chamber Orchestra (principal), North Allegheny Golden Strolling Strings (line leader), and North Allegheny String Quartet. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Honors Orchestra (principal), the All-East Division Conference Honors Orchestra, the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra (principal), and the Pittsburgh Symphony EQT Student Side-by-Side Orchestra.
Yosen began his piano studies with Ms. Sung-Im Kim at age six at Carnegie Mellon University, Music Preparatory School and performed at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall when he was eight years old. He is currently a pupil in pianist Dr. Marina Lupinacci's studio and was a piano duo winner (with his brother, Futen Wang) of the 2017 Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artists competition. In addition, he won 1st prize in the 2015 Pittsburgh Piano Teacher Association Duet Competition and the Steinway Society of Western PA Young Artist awards in 2014, 2015, and 2016. He has also had masterclasses with Neil Rutman and Spencer Myer.
Aside from classical music, Yosen earned his Master certification in Tae-Kwon Do and is a fourth-degree black belt. He teaches as a junior instructor at his martial arts school. Yosen received several scholastic awards including the National Merit Scholarship finalist, National Honor Society, Junior Honor Society, and the President's Education Award. In college, Yosen plans to study biology and viola performance. Recently, he has been selected as a Richmond Artist Scholar by the University of Richmond, a designation providing a four-year full scholarship recognizing his outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated talent in performing arts.
