Cellist Adam Liu joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Cello in 2003. Prior to this appointment Mr. Liu held the position of Associate Principal Cello with the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit for 6 seasons, including the 99-00 season as Principal Cello.
Mr. Liu was born in Tianjin, China. After intense study at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing he came to the US in 1986 on full scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, to study with Stephen Kates. Study continued, again on full scholarship at the University of Southern California with Lynn Harrell. Mr. Liu then joined the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, where he met his violinist wife Annette Liu, and where his two children Karina and Kevin were born.
Mr. Liu has been featured soloist with many fine orchestras world-wide, including the symphonies of Montreal, Victoria, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, San Antonio, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.
